IDEAS for Dolch Noun List
Originally, the 95 nouns were relevant to the young reader in the Dolch era. However, they can be easily adapted to areas of the curriculum: Listening and Speaking, Reading, Writing, Grammar and Spelling.
The following are a few ideas in which the Dolch nouns can be included in the class programme:
# Introduce the words in a meaningful way e.g. I saw a boat. Write short phrases e.g. article/adjective/noun or short descriptive sentences that contain a list noun
# Encourage students to create a personal dictionary in which they add meaningful nouns
# Arrange the cards in alphabetical order then read the words
# Read the words: excellent noun practice especially for ESL students
# Grammar: Use the noun list for ‘parts of speech’ activities
# Speaking and Listening: Talk about a selected noun topic. Use questions: Who? What? When? Where? Why? & How? Or De Bono’s Six Thinking Hats to prompt ideas and to ask questions. Great for impromptu talks.
# Play noun card games like:
WHAT AM I? Select a card. Student gives clues about the noun. Class provides answer
GUESS MY WORD: I begin with the letter … and end with the letter …. You will find me on a farm (Point: correct answer. Bonus point: Use the word in a sentence. Double points: correctly spell the noun).
