Sight Words


It is essential for readers and writers to develop a large number of sight words and phrases in order for them to immediately recognize high-frequency words.
Recognizing high-frequency words by sight frees students to concentrate on meaning as they read and write. It also helps them to learn other sight words and to improve reading fluency.

Marie Clay notes “a child has to accumulate a reading vocabulary of known words which he can recognize rapidly and does not have to work out. Only as this happens is the reader’s attention freed to work on new words and solve new text problems.” Becoming Literate: the construction of inner control 1991

Learners acquire sight vocabulary for reading and writing through:

  • Reading texts with high-frequency words
  • Locating high-frequency words in texts
  • Shared writing where high-frequency words are used
  • Writing or dictating texts using high-frequency words
  • Adapting familiar texts using high-frequency words
  • Constructing charts of high-frequency words
  • Playing with words in games, rhymes, and songs
